What do Au Cheval visitors reviews this place?
Definitely lives up to the hype!! While it’s probably not my number one favorite burger in the city, it’s definitely up there. If you get a burger you have to get the thick cut millionaires bacon and an egg on top- makes it the perfect burger! Wait times for this place are very long though and they do not take reservations. I’d recommend coming here during the weekday or something because while this burger is delicious I don’t know if it’s worth a 1 or even 2 hours wait.
I was told I had to stop by before I left Chicago, and I’m so glad I did! I was expecting a great burger, but I also got an awesome show. The way the team worked in unison to pump out the food on its own was exhilarating, let alone the smells, the sounds, and the taste! I had the waiter order my food for me, and got a cheeseburger with thick cut bacon and an egg on top and an order of fries. The combination worked perfectly, but let’s not kid ourselves, the bacon stole the show! The love and attention they put into the bacon was nothing less than magical. While I was sitting next that chef that was expediting, I heard him call out a Marrow plate with a side of bacon! Ok… whoever ordered that knew what they were doing! For such a small place, I get the long wait, but the overall experience of watching and smelling the open kitchen at work was worth every moment. Keep killing it!
This place delivered on the expectations I had going in based on all the reviews I read and the people I spoke to who included it within a very short list for the ‘best burger in Chicago.’ I went by for lunch and managed to grab a single seat at the bar for a beer and a burger. I went for the single with everything (except onions) and the added egg. The burger was great!; not a classy burger with prime quality meat, but it has to be the best ‘diner burger’ in all of Chicago.
There is usually a line here, I think because they don’t take reservations, but chances are pretty good that it will be worth the wait.

Dropped in on a Sunday evening on my last day in Chicago. As a solo diner the wait wasn’t too long as the quoted 45 minutes and ended up 25. Had a half order of the bone marrow which was delicious. Great quality bones and the use of Texas toast was a great ideal. The accompanied sauce cut through the delicious fat of the marrow making for a tasty starter.
Ordered the burger with both egg and bacon and it indeed one of the finest one I have wanted.
I haven’t reviewed this place already?! Well here it goes, I guess: I’m not really a big burger person, but this place has been listed as the Best Burger in the US, multiple times, I believe, so it had a lot of hype to live up to. For not being a burger freak, this place really impressed me, and lives up to it’s name.
Au Cheval has a smaller, fast food version of the restaurant, which I’ve tried, prior to my first time here (it’s called Small Cheval). Those burgers are fantastic, but the real deal at Au Cheval really takes it a step further.
Always great service and team going, including on my last visit.
They’re conscious of food allergies. Get the burger with a bun, it’s great, …or don’t. It’s still incredible without. I also love the fries and bone marrow.
Usually a decent wait, so go at off times if you want to wait less.
Also, they have a pretty cool bar program going.
