Sal’s Authentic NY Pizza – Fort Street

Thought I’d try the famous Sal’s, disappointed by the service. The server told me they didn’t have a pizza ‘100Slices Pepperoni black garlic’ !!

Once we worked out her POS button and the menu board didn’t exactly match, we were in business.

Unfortunately, I think there might be some training needed because the picture and the pizza I received were shy some pepperoni

Was it the best pizza I’ve ever had? …

Love their pepperoni pizza!… Ordered online to pick up but had to wait a few minutes for the order. No parking out front.

Just 2 tourists deciding on delivery at their hotel. We received a huge, hot, and incredibly tasty pizza + mozzarella sticks. Wish we could take Sal’s home with us to the Netherlands!

This location has the misfortune of a reviewer who was recently in NYC and knows a lot about pizza. I had a slice of the cheese pizza and in comparison to a slice of authentic NYC cheese pizza both the crust and sauce are lacking in flavor. I will start with the crust. Authentic NYC pizza crust is typically refrigerated and fermented for at least two days. This slows down the metabolism of the yeast causing it to produce different byproducts that add a ton of flavor. I suspect that the crust at Sal’s isn’t fermented at all as it was fairly flavorless. I can’t quite put my finger on what was wrong with the sauce because there wasn’t quite enough of it for me to taste it. NYC pizza isn’t heavy on sauce but this slice definitely had too little.

All this being said I have had worse pizza in NYC, but I would say the typical NYC pizza place is better than what you get here. Overall it’s not a terrible substitute for NYC pizza. Also, the staff was friendly and the restaurant was clean which aren’t typically at an authentic NYC pizza place 😉.

Go ahead and give Sal’s a try. You probably won’t be too disappointed, but don’t expect the best slice you have ever had.

Ordered online a half+half 5 boroughs and double pepperoni pizza for pick up.

Pros:
– Loved the dough, crust and thinness of the pizza. Nice and crispy.
– Good quantity of pepperoni.
– Good presentation.
– Great texture.
– Fairly friendly staff.

Cons:
– They were about 15 mins late on the order. I arrived about 5 minutes earlier than the scheduled order time and had to wait about 20 minutes for my pizza which I ordered online the day before.
– Despite the well done presentation, the pizza lacked flavor for both halves (5 boroughs more so). Although I was still happy with the pepperoni side overall and I liked it better than Dominos. The 5 Boroughs side however, was pretty disappointing. The black garlic didn’t have much flavour, lack of seasoning, and overall just had too much oil to taste the flavour of the ingredients put into it.
