This was a great restaurant. I spent two days looking for a regular place to eat that wasn’t over the top commercialized, over priced or geared towards the experience versus the food. Mother’s is located just off the French Quarters but an easy walk from there. Their food was very good. They had a great selection of the traditional local food and the price was fair. We were able to get to plates for around $30. The dining area was really basic but comfortable enough to enjoy the meal. The staff was very helpful since I have never had creole food before and the staff was happy to help explain and show pics of their food. Also, the food was very good. The gumbo and jambalaya was the best we’ve tried so far.
As you walk in they hand you a menu and you continue to the register to order your food. You order and they hand you your receipt and someone comes by and picks that up and brings your food right to you. Very simple and enjoyable.
It was very busy but well worth the wait. I ordered Jerry’s jambalaya, beans and rice, cabbage, and lemonade. It was delicious! The service is great all around. You order your food, sit down and then they bring it to your table. If I go back to NOLA I’m definitely going back here. Thanks to you all
First time visiting New Orleans, looking forward to experiencing some authentic gumbo. Initially, we had a destination in mind, but a fellow passenger in the elevator recommended this establishment, piquing our curiosity. We were inclined towards a cozy, family-owned eatery rather than a high-end restaurant. Despite the lengthy queue, our anticipation remained high as we perused the menus and made our selections at the cashier. Our order included a cup of jambalaya, a seafood combo, a biscuit, a seafood fried shrimp platter with two sides—rice and beans and potato salad—and a regular-sized portion of seafood gumbo. Regrettably, the overall experience fell short of expectations; the food arrived lukewarm, with the gumbo resembling more of a soup with rice and seafood flavoring. The rice and beans lacked flavor, while the shrimp was satisfactory and the potato salad exceptional. The jambalaya, however, stood out with its rich flavor. Considering the positive reviews about their po’boys, I am contemplating giving them another chance during my stay in New Orleans.
We had high hopes based on the reviews and the long, consistent line ups out the door. Unfortunately, it missed the mark.
The coffee was warm (not hot) and my dish was really bland. I understand the egg-white omelette is a healthier choice and may not have the same robust flavor as other dishes. But it had almost no flavor at all. Adding salt and pepper didn’t help much.
The staff were kind and the atmosphere was cool. It was fun to look at the celebrity-signed head shots. I wouldn’t come back for breakfast though.
