Southern Cross Garden Bar Restaurant

I asked the Internet for where to find a proper Sunday Roast. It’s a British thing and it’s great to see this tradition exists in New Zealand culture as well. Hooray for the Commonwealth!

Arriving at 6:40pm, the restaurant was only about halfway filled with a placard at the entrance announcing that this evening’s Roast is sliced sirloin. I was hoping for lamb but this will do. I sat by the window with my laptop and used some wifi before and after dinner.

My meal arrived after about ten minutes, a good portion with sliced sirloin, mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, roasted potatoes and yes, a Yorkshire pudding. A light gravy over all and the only point off is that they did not have any horseradish for the beef. Perfectly cooked, nicely presented and absolutely delicious.

Hooray for tradition and thank you, Southern Cross. A lovely Sunday evening meal.

This was the best meal I had in New Zealand. Everything was perfect – the service was impeccable and the food was delicious.

We had pita with hummus as starter and eye steak and lamb as main course – the meat was cooked to perfection.
Also, I think this is the first restaurant where the side salad was actually a really good one and not a sad two leaves and a cherry tomato salad.

I highly recommend this place.

Delicious food, lovely and friendly staff . We had the stone grilled eye fillet . It was so juicy and perfectly cooked as requested .The atmosphere was so chilled and warm ,we really did enjoy our 13th anniversary at Southern Cross garden Bar restaurant.

Great atmosphere and service. Their stone grill never let us down. Unfortunately, they may stop offering it soon as the stones are running out. Confit garlic hummus was recommended which was great.

A great lunch experience. Great menu with enough to choose from. Reasonable vegetarian options. Wide variety of drinks and well stocked bar. Great atmosphere. Inside and outside area. Well located.
